LA Beer Consumer Research

Consumers have a lot of choice of beers and breweries in LA. In this study, I researched how consumers discover, purchase, drink, and discuss beer. I interviewed 10 consumers to build an in-depth ‘customer journey map.’ Next I interviewed 5 brewery owners, 3 in LA, 1 in South Florida, and in 2 Israel, to understand how they’re marketing to consumers. I conducted a ‘quantitative’ survey to confirm and quantify these findings, and created a summary report (linked) that focused on recommendations for brewery owners.

https://heritageradionetwork.org/podcast/tapping-the-beer-data/

I love to share about beer and my research. I had the honor of appearing on Beer Sessions Radio to share. A flight, several slices of pizza, and a few beers later, and I found myself on the airwaves. General highlights include:

  • A look at the terms the beer industry uses vs. regular consumers

  • Popularity of new beverages, such as hard seltzer

  • Regional popularity of different styles

  • ‘Mobility gap’

Drinking Biddies: Episode 48

http://drinkingbiddies.libsyn.com/58-brouwerij-west-dog-ate-my-homework-feat-ethan-siegler-aka-hopstradamus-and-karen-janet

This episode is the birth of “Hopstradamus” the beer predictor. Hopstradamus can convert beer into predictions. This female-led podcast is “Just two girls on a beer journey.” On this journey, they dive into the fun world of beer with beer novices and experts. I was honored to join them and talk about all things beer and specifically about Dog Ate My Homework by Brouwerij West. Aside from looking like “the blood of [Jamie’s] enemies,” this beer got a solid rating from everyone.

Guided Beer Tastings

Beer is meant to be experienced, especially with friends! I love to lead guided beer tastings/education sessions where we can learn and experience beer first hand. Rather than just ‘thumbs up/down’ a beer, I walk you through the flavor components, intricacies, food pairings, and fun facts about the beer so you can have a memorable and mindful experience. For upcoming tastings, see Events, or you can contact me at ethan.siegler.2019@marshall.usc.edu to set up a private tasting.

Had a great time at Ethan’s beer tasting. He provided many different beer pairings and had foods that went well with each. I learned much more than I expected about the brewing and fermentation process and how one beer tastes different from another. Really enjoyable atmosphere with an awesome opportunity to learn more about beer.
